One of his nicknames was "One Lung Lou" for injuries sustained in the assault on Guam.
ReplyDeleteI was in Hawaii when General Wilson was selected to be CMC. Although an aviator, I was the CO/XO of the Marine Barracks at Lualualei. He began running before first light every day. He said, "I can't ask my Marines to do something I can't do". He only had one lung, but before he left Hawaii for DC, he was running the 3 mile PFT successfully. Quite a man and quite a Marine!
