FAO Quotables

"But being right, even morally right, isn't everything. It is also important to be competent, to be consistent, and to be knowledgeable. It's important for your soldiers and diplomats to speak the language of the people you want to influence. It's important to understand the ethnic and tribal divisions of the place you hope to assist."

Washington Post article every American should read on LtGen Kelly (Memorial and Veterans Day Reading List)

APRIL 2018 Update:  You should also read author Phil Klay's Atlantic, Two Decades of War Have Eroded the Morale of America’s Troops.  He ends the article with "...then it’s not the Taliban or al-Qaeda or isis that’s trying to kill you, it’s America." (You should also read his collection of short stories: Redeployment.  It was one of my favorite books of 2015.

This was one of the most complete and even-handed articles that I've ever read. He calls out shortfalls in numerous presidencies and notably decries a congress that has abdicated its responsibility through consecutive administrations dating back to the first Gulf War.

ORIGINAL POST:

Every American should read this article.   Period.   Then you should read the entire speech that General Kelly gave four days after his son was killed in Afghanistan (link at the bottom).
