FAO Quotables

"But being right, even morally right, isn't everything. It is also important to be competent, to be consistent, and to be knowledgeable. It's important for your soldiers and diplomats to speak the language of the people you want to influence. It's important to understand the ethnic and tribal divisions of the place you hope to assist."

"Libya: Transition and U.S. Policy" Congressional Research Service Report

I love these reports--always great summaries and good starting points for understanding issues.

"If voters approve a constitution in a national referendum, then new elections are to be held by mid-2013, bringing a nearly two-year transition process to a close."

"As of August 2012, USG has provided more than $200 million in assistance to Libya since their 2011 uprising."

FUUO Kickstarter of the Month: Creative Peace in Uganda

FUUO Kickstarter of the Month: Creative Peace

Every month or so I feature a new Africa-ish Kickstarter project on FUUO.  This month I am supporting a really interesting project called Creative Peace: Community, Public Arts and War-Torn Africa  The money supports the making of a documentary in which the production team will spend 4 months filming artists in Uganda that have been affected by violence.  The main thrust of their project appears to center on the healing power of collective art and the creative process--an idea I can get behind.    A $40 donation gets you a digital download of the film when it is completed!  Perhaps the one factor that pushed me to feature as a banner on my blog for the next month was that its creator Ashley Beckett supports so many other Kickstarter projects (10!)--I like that ethos!

If you aren't familiar with Kickstarter you should get familiar--it's a crowd-based charity/fundraising website.  If a project doesn't meet its stated financial goal in the allotted time you aren't charged anything.  Depending on the amount you donate you receive different incentives (like a digital download of the film in this case)!

But beware, it's addictive.

Past FUUO Supported Kickstarter projects (so far they've all been funding successes):

Smallsmall Thing: A Documentary Project

Lessons of Basketball and War

Save Blue Like Jazz The Movie Project

Finally, please check out the charity below.  They aren't a kickstarter project but are an excellent organization.
